Where it started
Jean Paul Gaultier was born in the suburbs of Paris. Since childhood, his first textbooks were fashion magazines, as well as TV, which he could watch all day, since his grandmother did not prevent it. Under the impression, he began to create costumes for his bear and constantly dressed him up in an astronaut costume, then in a wedding dress. Since then, he has been drawing inspiration from people on the streets, from television, art culture, paintings and historical events. The most important thing is that Jean Paul Gaultier is not afraid to mix all styles in his work.
He is one of the few fashion designers who did not receive a special education, did not study at major universities. Until the age of 18, he planned to become a hairdresser, but after sending his sketches to Pierre Cardin, he received an invitation to become his assistant.
Contribution to Fashion
For a whole year, from 1974 to 1975, Gaultier developed the Cardin line for the American market at the company’s office in Manila. And a year after this event, Gaultier, together with his school friend Francis Menyuzhe and Donald Potar, opened his own company, spending a minimum amount of money, because the 24-year-olds didn’t have much money.
Dresses were sewn from table napkins, electronic jewelry made from batteries and tea strainers, but already in this, his very first collection, Gaultier managed to reflect his own personality: mixing various genres, using unusual material, transforming some things. But, unfortunately, by coincidence, the time of the show of clothes from Gaultier coincided with the time of the show of the collections of another, more famous designer, and therefore there was no press, no famous guests, no standing ovation in the hall. Nobody noticed the first line of clothes.
Taking into account the mistakes of the first show, the designer realized that the best means of advertising is a scandal. He began to arrange his shows in the most unusual places: in a tram depot, in a boxing ring, in a former prison, in a museum of ancient carousels. The models he chose were also extraordinary. By his actions, he wanted to show that the clothes he invented are suitable not only for slender models with an ideal figure, but also for ordinary people. He believed that the model should not entertain the public, but first of all demonstrate clothes that anyone can wear.
Gaultier began to be called a fashion hooligan because he showed his models in the style of garbage design, as he used a variety of garbage for clothing models from his collections. In 1993, Gaultier released his first perfume, the bottle of which was in the form of a glass torso in underwear. And he even put it in a tin can.
In 1987, having met Madonna, he began to sew stage costumes for her. He also came up with outfits for Madonna’s Blond Ambition world tour, in particular the famous cone-shaped bra.
