About the Perfumer

Back in 1837, William Henry Penhaligon was born in the small port town of Penzance in the southwest of England. History is silent about William’s childhood and youth, but it is known for certain that in 1861 he began a career as a hairdresser in his hometown, and the following year he married, and four children were born in this marriage.

In 1869, Penhaligon and his family moved to the capital of the kingdom and became a barber of the Turkish baths located on Jermyn Street. Jermyn Street is a street in the Westminster district, where everything that gentlemen need is concentrated: baths and clubs, hairdressers, ateliers, ready-to-wear shops, tobacco and noble drinks. In 1870, William G. Penhaligon opened his barber shop on the street, where he offered his clients lotions and perfumes of his own production. The initiative is successful, the number of clients from high society is growing. In 1880, the brand was founded, and in 1892, on the wave of success, the founder created the first classic cologne in our understanding, Hammer Bouquet, a little arrogant, very aristocratic and quite appropriate for its time, and at the same time inimitable in the present.

However, in 1870 Extract of Limes was invented — an ambiguous, almost bitter fragrance with citrus and neroli. In 1901, the founder transferred the business to his son Walter, and died in 1902. The son did not let the spark die out, and in 1902, for the ninth Duke of Marlborough, he came up with the Blenheim Bouquet, a kind of citrus-coniferous mix aroma composition.

The Success

Upon learning of the death of the company’s founder, Queen Alexandra awards Penhaligon’s with the first royal warrant, which means that the company’s products are supplied to members of the royal court and worthy of trust. Further — more … Becoming the official supplier of perfumes for the English nobility, Penhaligons company is gaining momentum. The emphasis in the development of compositions is placed on ingredients from those plants that grow in the region: violets, bluebells, lilies of the valley, lilacs; extracts and aromatic substances imported from exotic countries and former colonies are also used.

At the same time, the main emphasis in perfumes is on aristocratic style, elegance and grace. This fact allowed the brand to receive a second Royal Warrant from the hands of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956. In 1970, Penhaligon’s company was going through a certain crisis. Sheila Pickles gave a new breath and a new impetus to the development of the brand. Under her leadership, a new boutique was opened in the Covent Garden area, and she concentrated the production and packaging of fragrances in the boutique itself, which guaranteed originality and quality.

Then she re-released all the flavors that were created in the company before her, which required some research work to restore the lost parts of the recipes. Finally, in 1988, the brand received a third royal patent — now from Prince Charles of Wales. In 2020, the company was bought out by the Spanish corporation Puig, which also owns brands such as Carolina Herrera, Paco Rabanne, Jean Paul Gaultier and Nina Ricci. Today Penhaligon’s continues to develop successfully, being a good example of the English style.
